Spring has sprung, it’s a time of renewal; to come out of hibernation and kick winter skin to the curb. The lack of humidity in the cooler months in combination with indoor heat can result in a build up of dead skin cells making our skin appear dull, dehydrated and lack-luster. BEVERLY HENDERSON gives us her easy tips for glowing spring skin.

1. Exfoliation
Sloughing away the accumulation of built up dead skin cells with a gentle physical scrub will brighten skin and ensure improved penetration of active ingredients.

Easy tiger… don’t be too over zealous, once or twice a week is sufficient. Follow with a hydrating mask for the perfect resurfacing combo to brighten skin.

Striping the skin with harsh products will cause further dehydration which exacerbates fine lines and wrinkles, compromising barrier function which may result in irritation as the skin loses the ability to retain moisture.

In-clinic skin therapies such as Microdermabrasion, Epic-blading or Superficial Chemical Peels are all good modalities to kick start this process.

2. Hydration
Moisture matters! initially a heavy duty moisturiser may be required to restore barrier function by soothing compromised skin but once improved a lighter textured moisturiser is preferable in the warmer months.

The benefits of hydrated skin are not just apparent now, locking in moisture reduces trans epidermal water loss and encourages healthy skin function for which you will be rewarded with visible results in the future.

3. Spring clean your make up brushes
Simple right? but it can make a profound difference to skin health.

The residue of dead skin cells on your brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria which can aggravate breakouts and even lead to a bacterial staph infection.

Ideally brushes should be washed every 7 to 10 days with a gentle shampoo in luke-warm water. Rinse well and dry on a paper towel or gently blow dry.

4. Nutrition
Whilst skin requires nourishment and hydration from topical ingredient application, our diet also plays a pivotal role in the promotion of healthy glowing skin.

All organs in the body require H20 and nutrients for optimal function, as the body’s largest organ, skin is no exception. Snacking on fruit and raw veggies such as celery, which is packed with water, is a good way to increase water not to mention vitamins and minerals.

In relation to antioxidants and skin health… eat the rainbow!! Its so important to eat colourfully to get the body’s required nutrition. Vibrant, colourful fruits and vegetables are a rich sources of antioxidants which help neutralise free radical damage and assist the function of photo-protection.

Healthy fats such as avocado, nuts in combination with fish and a variety of phytonutrients will nourish from the inside out and bring back your glow.

5. Protection
There is no avoiding the high UV radiation of our Australian sun, so prevention from an early age is key.

The profound affect of photo-damage on skin health is well documented and is reportedly responsible for 90 per cent of premature skin ageing. In time this presents as visible lines, thickened skin texture with irregular vascular and pigmented lesions.

The application of a broad spectrum, physical sunscreen minimum SPF 30 is a non negotiable for preventative ageing and healthy skin. It should be included in your daily self care… just like brushing your teeth.

For skins with existing sun damage a routine including anti oxidant topical application can improve the signs of existing photo-damage in addition to in-clinic dermal therapies to help lighten the skin.
