9 steps to successful online teaching
If you plan to teach online and you’re wondering if it’s worth spending the time and money the short answer is YES.
It’s not for everyone though, and many online trainings fail for various reasons: poor content, poor engagement, lack of visibility.
Although it is getting easier and easier to teach online as technology evolves, learners are getting pickier and pickier when it comes to online learning which means that we have to adapt and find new ways to get students engaged and successful.
Because after all if you want to be successful, your students need to be successful.
Let’s go over my 9 little secrets to successfully teach online!
1. KNOW YOUR STUFF
That can sound obvious but it’s true. I see so many people trying to teach something they don’t master themselves.
If you want to teach online and make money from it, you need to know your stuff.
2. SOLVE A PROBLEM THAT YOUR AUDIENCE IS READY TO PAY FOR
I always tell my clients to look at their online teaching as a solution to a problem.
And the best way to find out what that problem is, is to talk to people. Let them tell you what they’re struggling with.
Once you have a good idea for a course, make sure that people are also ready to pay for it, usually that ties into the level of pain or frustration that they have and how badly they’re looking for a solution.
3. FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS
We tend to focus on things that we know how to do, tasks we’re familiar with like creating your course and content. While that is very important that is not the only part. That’s why it’s critical that you learn to delegate things that you don’t know how to do or that you don’t want to do. that is especially true for techie stuff that often cause a project to fail because of technical roadblocks.
In short, try to delegate, focus on what you know how and love to do and delegate the rest.
4. CREATE A STRATEGY TO BRING IT TO MARKET
You can have the best course or program online, if you don’t have a strategy to out it front of the right people at the right time, you won’t get students to signup, they won’t get results and as a result you won’t be successful.
The strategy is more important than the content itself, in fact they say you should spend 20% of your time on the offer and 80% of your time marketing it!
5. HAVE A ROBUST AND FUNCTIONAL PLATFORM
This is one of the pieces of the puzzle that is going to make or break you success. If your platform is clunky, hard to navigate, students are struggling to find the information they’re looking for, there is no progress tracking or way to contact you if they have questions, you won’t get engaged students, they might not even finish your course and drop it, and as a result you won’t be successful.
6. OUTSTANDING SUPPORT
Be there for them every step of the way. Because everything is online and we don’t get to meet face to face, it’s crucial that you have some type of support, whether it’s a forum, a Facebook group. They need a place where they can help and support each other and where they know they can ask questions and get answers. If you’re teaching live (versus self study), then make sure they have an opportunity to ask you questions and connect with you.
7. NOW IS BETTER THAN NEVER
If you’re struggling with perfectionism, you’re not alone. The number of courses or online programs that got started but not finished is huge. Before you start working on it, ask yourself: how much do I want this? Am I going to give it all I got? If you’re not ready to go full in and see it completed, your course or program will most probably never see the light of day.
8. DESIGN YOUR COURSE FOR SUCCESS
Spend the time to really think of the big idea behind your teaching.
Provide a learning experience to your students.
Break it down into small chucks that have tangible results
Use multiple media:some people are visual, others prefer to read or listen.
If you’re making videos, provide transcripts and audio if it makes sense.
Add gamification to encourage your students to go through the materials and do the homework
9. HAVE THE RIGHT MINDSET
when we’re really good and passionate about a topic, it is so easy to hide behind it and put all the other important tasks in the back burner. It’s critical for your success that you go into this adventure with an entrepreneur mindset we’re you’ll need to wear many hats to make it happen.
