If you could name one thing that you’d find in everyone’s wardrobe (including men) what would it be? Surely the first thing that comes to mind is a good old trusty pair of jeans. You’d be challenged to find a wardrobe without a pair and will usually find multiples – skinny leg, stove pipe, bell bottom, flares, stone wash, cords, black, white, blue, grey…
What started out as a necessity for the working man (thank you Leo Strauss) is today the number one wardrobe staple around the world, and now with winter truly upon us, what better time than now to look at how we are rockin’ our denims!
What’s old is new again
Before you hit the shops, look in your own cupboard, maybe you have a few pairs in there that could use a little update. So if you’re game for a little bit of DIY denim, there are some great trends getting around at the moment that you can easily recreate to take your jeans from forgotten to fashion-forward with a snip of the scissors, a roll of the hem or a bit of roughing up with the cheese grater.

The raw hemline is a big one, from a subtle 1cm fringe right through to about 15cm, it all depends on how much fun you want to have with it! This look is a firm favourite with fashionistas and bloggers. Almost every brand has a version and it is definitely one you can take to with the scissors and try at home.

Are you feeling distressed?
Distressed denim is still very popular and always manages to add that little bit of rock star to your outfit, I think everyone should have at least one pair of jeans with rips or tears, even if it is just a little slit at the knee, they have a different personality to your everyday jeans, they’re a little bit more rebellious and edgy. Try a pair, you’ll see!

Rollin’ with the homies
Rolled hemlines are also back on fashionable legs; again it can be a small 1cm turn up or a serious cuff reaching mid-calf, this look is excellent with heels but also totally acceptable with flats.

Time to get fit
It’s really important to choose your jeans by fit and comfort over brand; what might be a favoured label by your girlfriends could be the entirely wrong look for you. And always remember to try different waistlines and cuts, your jeans need to be that special item in your wardrobe you can trust, the one item you can throw on and KNOW you look good and have that certain bit of extra confidence.
Dedicate some time and try as many pairs as you can, because the perfect pair is waiting for you and will stick with you for years to come, so choose well ladies and stay warm.
