Style Q + A
It’s all about killer-mum style this month. I catch up with Jess Dempsey, founder of fashion blog, What would Karl do? to talk maternity style and to find out how she juggles being a full time mum with being a full time style icon.
What does a typical day in the life of Jess Dempsey look like?
Wake up, get two kids ready (and myself), fed and out the door by 8:30am! On Monday to Wednesday I work from home and Thursday and Friday I have the boys all day. I usually try and juggle home cleaning and getting jobs done on my work days if I don’t have a meeting or photoshoot scheduled in. By 3pm I am on pickup duty and get back home to prepare dinner, then bath and put the kids to bed.
How did you build your brand into the success it is today?
It is all about networking, staying true to your brand and believing in yourself. I have been doing this for 6 years, I had two kids in between and try to prioritise family first, so it was a slow and steady process for me. I was lucky to be one of the first Melbourne bloggers when I stared and a lot of opportunities came my way early.
Have you always had a love for style and fashion?
Yes, always! I always worked in fashion retail and then studied Visual merchandising at RMIT. I worked for HUGO BOSS and started styling.
How do you balance your work and family life while raising two young sons?
It was the hardest thing for me, trying to find the time to answer an email when one of my boys is screaming out for me to feed him or change him or anything. I found that when my eldest was in kinder, I put my youngest in childcare a couple of days a week and I could dedicate that time to work and then after kinder pick up, it was back to mama duty. It’s not easy. I spend a lot of my night (or most) on my laptop when the kids are in bed.

What is your best tip for remaining stylish while pregnant?
Remember your style and stick to it. If you don’t usually wear leggings, then don’t. If you love wearing your denim jacket, find a similar one in a larger size. Try to be you as much as possible, as comfortable as possible and as happy as possible.
